Our Vision

Floridians with asthma will achieve optimal health and quality of life.

Our Mission

To reduce the overall burden of asthma, with a focus on minimizing the disproportionate impact of asthma in racial/ethnic and low-income populations, by promoting asthma awareness and disease prevention at the community level and expanding and improving the quality of asthma education, management, and services through system and policy changes.

Our Goals

  • Increase awareness and early detection of asthma.
  • Increase the number of patients with asthma who have a dedicated asthma care-provider (either PCP within a medical home or asthma specialist) who provides consistent self-management, planning, and education.
  • Reduce the number of deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, school or work days missed, and limitations on activity due to asthma.
  • Reduce asthma disparities among populations disproportionately affected by asthma.

Know More About Asthma

Asthma is a disease that affects the lungs. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and the percentage of Florida adults with asthma is on the rise. Asthma causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and nighttime or early morning coughing. In most cases we do not know what causes asthma, and we do not know how to cure it. We do know that asthma tends to run in families.

Asthma can be controlled and episodes can be avoided by knowing the warning signs of an episode, staying away from things that trigger an episode, and following the advice of a doctor or other medical professional.

When asthma is controlled, an individual:

  • will not have symptoms such as wheezing or coughing,
  • will sleep better,
  • will not miss work or school,
  • can take part in all physical activities, and
  • will not have to go to the hospital or emergency department.

More information about asthma can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at http://www.cdc.gov/asthma/faqs.htm.

Asthma Data and Statistics

Approximately 1 in 10 children and 1 in 12 adults in Florida have current asthma. The Florida Department of Health’s Asthma Program regularly releases reports about asthma’s impact on Florida. Recent reports include:
